Built in 1949 by Blackstones of Bideford for Trinity House as a General Service Launch, her rugged construction and attractive lines made her ideal for conversion into this powerful strongly built Gaff Cutter.
She was stripped to a bare hull and rebuilt by the present owner between 1999 and 2005. The design, construction and quality of finish clearly demonstrate the owner's years of boat building and sailing experience.
The hull is constructed of larch on oak frames, copper nailed and bronze screw fastened. The deck, superstructure and cockpit are marine plywood sheathed in glassfibre woven cloth and epoxy resin. She has teak hatches, bulwark and cockpit coaming cappings, handrails etc.
The engine is the classic Ford Sabre D6 6 cylinder 120 hp diesel engine, supplied as a re-manufactured full unit and has now clocked approximately 250 hours running. It uses an economical 4.5 to 5 litres of fuel per hour at a cruising speed of 6 to 6.5 knots and gives a maximum speed of 8.8 knots.
Her powerful gaff cutter rig is on a solid Finnish pine varnished pole mast with hand spliced 13mm galvanised wire rigging and galvanised rigging screws. She has a hollow Douglas fir varnished boom and varnished spruce gaff both with traditional jaws at the mast. Running rigging is from the Gleistein "Classic" range with varnished wooden blocks. Under sail this rig gives excellent performance with many options for all weather conditions and can push her up to 7.5-8 knots in strong winds.
