Wooden Classic Ex Admiralty MFV - Details

Built for the Admiralty in 1944 by J Bolson & Sons, Poole, Dorset as MFV 740. replica watches

She served with the Royal Navy in Belgium up until the end of September 1945, then patrolled off Lowestoft till the end of that year. She was then transferred to Rosyth and operated from HMS Queensferry, servicing the reserve fleet.

She then transferred to the Clyde in 1950. In 1956 her original Chrysler "Royal" petrol engine was replaced with a Foden FD6 diesel engine. she carried on working in the Clyde until 1981 when she was transferred to the Northern Area Sea Cadet Corps and on the West Coast of Scotland, still based in the Clyde. She had a total of 43 years Naval service.

Decommissioned in 1987 she was purchased by the current owners and used as as offshore cruiser as well as being loaned to the Maritime Volunteer Service as a training craft.

In 1994 she appeared in the Battle of the Atlantic review as a wartime minor war vessel.
In 2004 she appeared in Liverpool at the Albert Dock Commemorative Event.

Apart from Sea Cadet work, the owners have cruised her extensively on the West Coast of Scotland and the Irish Sea.

She is listed with the National Register of Historic Ships as MFV 740, registration number 1930.

Accommodation:

Entered via a round hatch in the fore deck, the main cabin has 7 bunks with lockers below, hanging space, a main table, lounge area with lockers above and below and a coal/wood stove.

The two berth forward cabin has lockers below and a small locker on the starboard side.

The heads compartment is fitted with a Baby Blake sea toilet, shower, hand basin and small locker.



Galley:

Full size gas stove with 4 rings, grill and oven. Microwave oven. Tiled work surfaces. Full size stainless steel sink with hot and cold pressurised water, plus cold water from the deck tank.
There are lockers above and below with plates, pots, pans and cutlery for 10 persons. Fridge freezer.
Gas shut off and alarm system and emergency exit above.


Sails:

Not fitted with sails. she was rigged temporarily with sails on a test basis and found to give a good 2 - 3 knots in a steady wind, proving she would make an efficient motor sailer if rigged correctly.

Rigel Poseidon 5 Inch compass, Furuno Marine radar, Model 1831,Furuno GPS Model GP31, Furuno Navtex Model NX300, Nasa target echo sounder, Nasa Target Log, Icom VHF DSC Radio Model 421, Piranha Max 20 fish finder, Icom VHF hand radio model IC-M12, Wind force meter, Suunto Commander hand bearing compass, Walker & Wasp trailed logs, barometer, clock, hygrometer.


Electrical System:

2 sets of paralleled 12 volt batteries in engine room giving 24 volts fed by engine dynamo and battery chargers. Emergency battery in wheelhouse.

Diesel generator providing 240 volt a.c. supply at 2.5 kilowatts via an MCB switch panel. Shore power leads are also available.


Equipment:

2 six person life rafts, 15 Life jackets, inflatable and BOT, Safety harness, MOB sling, 4 life buoys with lights, flare pack, Aldis lamp, Searchlight, fog horn, Fire blanket and extinguishers, radar reflector.
4 Admiralty full size chart folios, Navigation hand equipment, binoculars, signal flags and ensigns. safety , machinery and navigation literatures. Fenders, ladder, Fender board, support legs.
Power and hand tools, Pressure washer, compressor. Engine, generator and gearbox spares
Maxon type ST-260 Tender with 2.5 Hp Johnson outboard, oars and fold up transom wheels.

Layout Deck;(From the bow); Bow roller, anchor cat davit, mooring bollards, Fore skylight, Hull support legs, vent, CQR anchor, Emergency water tank, Galley hatch, dorado vent, Mast with davit, main hatch with anchor winch, hatch to accommodation, vents and skylight, boat hooks, Ladder. Fender board, Fore locker, Vents, Side seat lockers contains mooring ropes ,6 Fenders, Wheelhouse with chart table and seat locker to port, with life jackets, flares, etc. under, aft seat lockers containing bosun's stores, paint & buckets, aft mooring bollards, emergency tiller and engine vent.

Layout Below; (From the Bow) 2 Water tanks, 2 berths to port with lockers under, small locker to starboard, barometer and talking fish, water pump, and small shelf aft. Heads to port access via galley, with shower, basin and small locker. Galley with equipment as previously described, Water tight door to main accommodation, access ladder to starboard, 4 berths to starboard, centre aft berth, two berths to port all with lockers below, Fridge freezer port side, lounge area to port with lockers above and under seats , coal/wood fire forward. Carbon monoxide detector fitted aft.
Engine room fuel tanks port and starboard, main fuel duplex filter. Bilge pump and valves forward of engine, Battery and tool lockers to starboard, Generator to port, aft storage lockers, steering gear.

Additional Notes: Has been in regular use, maintained and slipped (Last slipped April 2010), survey done late 2008, and almost all recommendations done. Navigation equipment is all integrated with a NMEA output for use with a laptop and chart software, (i.e. Admiralty Charts), supplied with charts covering Somerset to East coast of Scotland with the East coast of Ireland. Has legs for drying out on firm surface. Mooring equipment, paint and Bosun's stores.
Known defects; Minor deck leaks depending on weather and use, Aft covering board split, light oil seepage on gearbox control cover.
